As a Taiwanese American, I am deeply saddened and disturbed by what is unfolding in Dr. Ko Wen-je’s case.

The court is currently considering whether to extend his detention, after already holding him for nine months without valid evidence.

In the previous court hearing, one of the prosecution’s main witnesses reversed his statement, admitting under oath that he never witnessed Dr. Ko engage in any bribery. Another so-called witness — who himself approved similar development projects while serving as vice mayor in a different city — was exposed for doing exactly what Ko was being accused of.

Even more troubling, the court allowed an irrelevant witness, with no involvement in city development and no subject legal expertise, to testify. Their statements were clearly biased and favored the current ruling administration.

One of the most controversial accusations against Ko involved a land development project that many had criticized. Ironically, that same project later became widely accepted and supported once it gained attention from international partners — and suddenly, those critics went silent.

It is heartbreaking to watch the legal system in Taiwan be weaponized to isolate and destroy one individual, while those in power continue to operate with impunity. This is not the democracy we stand for. As someone who values justice and rule of law, I cannot look away.

當一位台裔美國人，我對柯文哲司法案件的發展感到極度悲傷與震驚。

法院目前正考慮是否再次延長羈押，在沒有確實證據的情況下，柯文哲已經被關押了整整九個月。

在前幾次的法庭準備庭中，檢方的主要證人之一當庭推翻了原先的証詞，承認他從未親眼見過柯文哲擔任市長涉及任何賄賂行為，之前提供的証詞全憑個人臆測。另一位前市府證人曾在擔任另一城市副市長時，用同樣的都計法規核准過類似的開發案，也因此被揭露出自己也做過相同的事，卻來指控柯文哲前市長違法。

更令人難以接受的是，法院竟然讓一位完全沒有城市開發經驗，也沒有此案相關法律背景的人出庭作證，而這名證人常上脫口秀其發言一向明顯偏袒執政黨，缺乏客觀中立性。

另一項對柯文哲頗具爭議的指控，是關於某塊台北市土地開發案。當時不少人批評他圖利財團，但諷刺的是，當這個案子獲得國際知名合作夥伴關注並支持後，那些批評聲浪卻悄然無聲了。

我們眼睜睜看著台灣司法制度被濫用，將一個人孤立並打壓至極限，而權力者卻繼續享有特權、毫無約束。這不是我們所捍衛的民主體制。身為重視法治與正義的人，無法視若無睹。
