Save Taiwan: A 911 Call for Defending Dr. Ko's Justice & Health

Petition update and key dates 7/1 and 7/26!

July 1 – Supporters call for Taiwan's judicial system to implement court live streaming for all major cases. Transparency is not optional in a democracy.

July 26 – All Taiwanese citizens who believe in democracy must vote against the recall campaigns.

Taiwan's system is dangerously broken: legislators elected by over 50% of the vote can now be removed by less than 30%. This is not democracy, it's a political weapon.

Why We’re Speaking Out

Since 5/22, there have been no public updates from Save Taiwan petition, not out of silence, but out of deep frustration over how Taiwan's judicial system is being manipulated for political purposes. As a group of concerned citizens and Asian Americans who believe in justice and democracy, we cannot stay quiet while these events continue to unfold.

May–June: Court Testimonies Keep Flipping

 • In May and June, Dr. Ko Wen-je appeared in court at least 10 times.

 • At least five key witnesses, including two co-defendants who had pled guilty, have reversed their statements in court.

 -They all testified clearly that:

 -Ko did not break the law as mayor,

 -They never saw him take bribes,

 -Ko never told them to approve anything benefiting a developer.

Yet the court still extended Ko's detention for another two months, even as the prosecution's case collapses. This appears to serve the ruling party's political agenda, not the rule of law.

Weaponized Recall Campaigns

After losing their majority in the legislature, the DPP launched aggressive recall efforts targeting opposition lawmakers and government officials/mayor, including those from the Taiwan People's Party and the KMT Party.

In response, many citizens supporting the KMT Party were forced to launch counter-recall efforts only to face arrests and legal threats. Meanwhile, recalls against DPP lawmakers quietly failed and were left unchallenged.

This is a clear sign that the recall system is being abused as a political weapon, not used fairly or democratically.

Ko Faces 14 More Court Dates – Supporters Demand Transparency

Dr. Ko is expected to appear in court at least 14 more times in July and August.

Just yesterday (6/20) large numbers of supporters gathered outside the detention center to protest Ko's extended detention, the political abuse of the recall system, and to demand judicial fairness and transparency. The people are speaking up and the world needs to listen.

Supporters are also urging Taiwan's judiciary to allow live streaming of major court cases, as is standard practice in democracies like the United States.

Here are the facts:

 • In the U.S., even in white-collar cases, pretrial detention is rare unless the accused poses a serious risk.

 • Court hearings especially high-profile ones are often open to the public, with video livestreams or at minimum audio recordings.

If the DPP claims to uphold American democratic values, then Taiwan's courts must reflect that same standard.

Keeping a political opponent locked away behind closed doors, despite flipped testimonies, is not democracy, it's suppression.

Final Call

It's time for Taiwan to:

 • Modernize its court system

 • Adopt court livestreaming for public oversight

 • And protect democracy by stopping corrupt recall abuse

July 1 and July 26 will be turning points. The world is watching and the people of Taiwan must act.

7 月 1 日 — 要求重大案件開放法庭直播。在一個民主國家，透明不是選項，是基本要求。

7 月 26 日 — 所有台灣的民主公民應該投票反對罷免案！

現行制度極度不公，立委是用超過 50% 的選票當選，卻可能被不到 30% 的票罷免。這不是民主，而是赤裸裸的政治操弄！

自 5/22 以來，此連署文未再公開發聲，並非沉默，而是因為對台灣司法制度遭到政治濫用感到極度失望與憤怒。作為重視法治與民主的公民與亞裔美國人，我們不能對這些發展視而不見。

5–6 月：證人翻供，檢方說法不攻自破

 • 在 5 月與 6 月，柯文哲前市長已至少 出庭 10 次。

 • 至少 五位關鍵證人，包括 兩位曾認罪的共同被告，都已在法庭上 翻供。

 • 他們一致證明：

 • 柯前市長 並未違反職務法規，

 • 從未收受賄賂，

 • 也沒有 要求任何人核准圖利特定建商的案件。

儘管檢方證據已經站不住腳，法院卻仍然決定 再延押柯文哲兩個月，令人質疑司法是否已經淪為執政黨的政治工具。

被操弄的罷免行動

民進黨在失去國會多數席次後，選後立刻發動一連串 針對在野黨立委和新竹市長的罷免行動。

為了反制，許多支持國民黨的公民被迫對應連署行動，卻遭到 逮捕與打壓。與此同時，針對民進黨立委的違規連署，司法卻悄悄無聲，毫無追究。

罷免制度已經明顯被 政治化、武器化，不再是公平民主的一環。

7、8 月將再出庭 14 次，支持者呼籲司法開放直播審判

柯文哲預計在 7 月與 8 月 即將 出庭至少 14 次。

就在昨天（6/20），大批支持者聚集在柯文哲被羈押的看守所外，表達對司法濫權的不滿，並呼籲停止政治迫害、停止濫用罷免制度。這場自發集會展現了民間對正義與透明的強烈渴望。

同時，民眾也強烈要求：台灣應開放重大案件的審判直播，如同美國與其他民主國家早已實施的制度。

我們要再次強調：

 • 在美國，白領犯罪案件，若無明確逃亡或危險風險，法院通常不會羈押被告。

 • 許多重大案件都會提供 直播或錄音紀錄，以保障公眾的知情權與司法公正。

民進黨口口聲聲說要與美國價值接軌，那麼司法是否也應達到同樣的透明與公平？

司法不應成為政治打壓的工具。

台灣是時候站起來改革，開放審判直播、還原真相、守住民主的最後一道防線。

最後呼籲, 台灣必須

 • 改革司法制度

 • 推動法庭直播法案

 • 阻止濫用罷免、守住人民的選票與民主基礎

7 月 1 日與7 月 26 日將是關鍵轉折點，

國際社會正在看，台灣人民更要站出來！
