Taiwan People's Party(TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang(黃國昌) said in his social media post:
"Bring Democracy Back to Taiwan — Opposition Leaders Summit"
Today's Opposition Leaders Summit addressed critical and pressing issues facing our nation. The reason Chinese Nationalist Party(KMT) Chairman Eric Chu(朱立倫) and I were able to engage in direct dialogue in such a short timeframe lies in the will of the people—a collective call for greater democracy, unity, and a shared hope that transcends partisan boundaries during a time of national crisis.
While political parties may differ in ideology and compete within a democratic framework, we must speak with one voice when confronting the world. In moments of adversity, unity is not an option—it is a necessity. Our foremost responsibility is to support Taiwan and safeguard the well-being of its people.
In response to the challenges presented by the United States' high-tariff policies, I have proposed four concrete policy recommendations:
•Inclusive Decision-Making: Ensure the participation of civil society and the Legislative Yuan at both the preliminary and intermediate stages of trade negotiations.
• Bilateral Free-Trade Agreement: Advocate for the signing of a Taiwan–U.S. Free-Trade Agreement to deepen economic ties and reduce barriers.
• Competitive Tariff Benchmarks: Maintain tariff levels that do not exceed those of major competitors, such as Japan and South Korea.
• Civil Impact Assessment Platform: When the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) fails to provide transparent impact assessments, the opposition will establish an independent platform. This body will include local governments, academic experts, industry leaders, and labor representatives to conduct ongoing "civil versions" of impact assessments.
While the DPP focuses its energy on sowing division and labeling domestic adversaries, it has failed to fulfill its governance responsibilities. The opposition, bearing the expectations of the public, must take action immediately—with sleeves rolled up and resolve in our hearts.
Taiwan now faces another grave crisis: the drift toward authoritarianism under President William Lai. Democracy and the rule of law are under threat. On August 30 of last year, an investigative team under Lai's administration raided former Chairman Ko Wen-je(柯文哲) and the Taiwan People's Party(TPP) headquarters. What followed was a coordinated smear campaign—driven by a triad of the ruling party, prosecutors, and media—designed to vilify, isolate, and detain Ko Wen-je, effectively aiming to dismantle the TPP.
At the time, we warned loudly: "Today it's Ko Wen-je; tomorrow it could be anyone.(今日柯文哲,明日任何人)" Unfortunately, those words have become reality. The judicial justice we pursue is not for a single individual—it is a universal right belonging to every Taiwanese citizen. No one should suffer such political persecution.
To restore integrity to our justice system, the Taiwan People's Party pledges to amend the Court Organization Act(法院組織法) and introduce live broadcasts of courtroom proceedings, allowing sunlight to shine into the judiciary and expose any abuse of power. We must also take decisive steps to end political interference in judicial processes. The crime of obstructing judicial fairness must be enshrined in law, with the necessary legislation passing its third reading in this session of the Legislative Yuan.
By defending the role of Congress and utilizing the oversight power of the opposition, we can implement the reforms the DPP has failed to deliver and halt William Lai's dangerous march toward autocracy.
This land, Taiwan, is deserving of our collective commitment.
Let it be clear: today's summit is not a conclusion, but a beginning. A comma—not a period. "Action" has always been the DNA of the Taiwan People's Party. For this nation, for this land, and for the people of Taiwan, we will never retreat when it is time to stand and act.
I firmly believe that through courageous, unified action, we can illuminate a path through darkness and together create a new chapter of hope for Taiwan and its future.
